Ingredients :
No. 1 Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi)180 g;
No. 2 Shenqu (Massa Fermentata Medicinalis)60 g;
No. 3 Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae)90 g;
No. 4 Fuling (Poria)90 g;
No. 5 Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae)30 g;
No. 6 Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae)30 g;
No. 7 Laifuzi ( Semen Raphani)30 g.
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder and prepare into boluses, take9 g each time with warm boiled water or malt water for oral use, three times daily; or prepare the drugs directly as oral decoction, with dosages reduced proportionally.
Actions:
Promoting digestion and regulating the stomach.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for food stagnancy due to indigestion, marked by epigastric and abdominal stuffiness and pain, belching and regurgitation, poor appetite and vomiting, or diarrhea, thick greasy fur and smooth pulse. It is applicable to acute or chronic gastritis, acute or chronic enteritis, dyspepsia, infant diarrhea and others with the above symptoms,which pertain to food stagnancy. This is a peptic recipe with mild effect. Therefore Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) and Binglang ( Semen Arecae ) should be added in case of excessive food stagnancy so as to enhance the peptic action.
And Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae)and Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) should be added to clear away heat in case of heat transformed from food stagnancy, manifested as thirst and desire for drinking,yellowish fur and rapid pulse. Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) should be added to activate the spleen in its transporting and transforming function incase of constipation due to weakness of the spleen.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by improper diet or intemperate eating and drinking, leading to indigestion, obstruction of qi activity, disharmony between the spleen and stomach as well as the generation of dampness and heat. This should be treated by promoting digestion and regulating the stomach. No.1 in large dosage is capable of removing food stagnancy of whatever kind, especially the stagnancy of meat or oily food, and functions as monarch drug. No. 2 can activate the spleen and digest those long-standing liquor or food, while No. 7 can descend qi and digest the stagnated grain or flour food, both acting as minister drugs.
The combination of the monarch and minister drugs can remove stagnancy of whatever kind. No. 3 and No. 5 have the function of promoting the circulation of qi and promoting digestion as well as regulating the stomach and relieving vomiting. No. 4 possesses the effect of inducing diuresis and reinforcing the spleen as well as regulating the middle-energizer and stopping diarrhea. No. 6 is capable of clearing away heat and resolving mass. These four ingredients play the role of adjuvant drugs in the recipe.
Cautions:
This recipe, mild in its efficacy and with the actions of promoting digestion and regulating the stomach, should not be used for patients with abdominaldistending pain and constipation.
