Ingredients:
No. 1 Weijing (Rhizoma Phragmitis) 60 g;
No. 2 Yiyiren (Semen Coicis) 15 g;
No. 3 Dongguazi ( Semen Benincasae) 15 g;
No. 4 Taoren ( Semen Persicae ) 9 ;
Administration:
Decoct No. 1 first in water to get the decoction, in which the rest ingredients are decocted. Remove residue from the decoction, which is to be taken separately.
Actions:
Clearing away heat from the lung and resolving phlegm, removing stasis and promoting pus discharge.
Clinical Application:
This recipeis indicated for pulmonary abscess, marked by expectoration of yellowish stench sputum with blood and pus and stinking smell, vague pain in the chest which aggravates while coughing, reddened tongue with greasy yellowish fur, smooth and rapid pulse. It is applicable to pulmonary abscess, lobar pneumonia, bronchitis, pertussis, and cthers, which have chief manifestations as chest pain, cough, expectoration of sputum with stinking smell or pus and blood, reddened tongue with greasy yellowish fur and pertain to accumulation of heat and phlegm in the lung. If pus is not yet formed, add Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerce) and Yuxingcao (Herba Houttuyniae) to strengthen he effect of eliminating heat and toxin. If pus is already formed, add Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Gancao ( Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae) to promote the effect of removing phlegm and discharge pus.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by excessive heat in the lung, complicated with phlegm accumulation. It should be treated by clearing away heat from the lungand removing phlegm so as to promote pus discharge. No. 1 has the function of clearing and purging away heat from the lung and is considered the primary drug for treatingcarbuncles, which functions as monarch drug in this recipe. No. 3 is capable of eliminating heat and phlegm in order to discharge pus, while No. 2 clearing away heat and inducing diuresis to promote pus discharge. Both are minister drugs. No. 4 possesses the function of promoting blood circulation and removing stasis as well as moistening the lung and loosening bowels and plays the role of adjuvant drug, which can direct the accumulated phlegm downward when combined with No. 3 so that phlegm is removed and carbuncle subdued.
