No. 1 is capable of replenishing qi and expelling toxins, while No. 3 promoting pus discharge and resolving mass, both acting as monarch drugs. No. 2 and No. 5 possess the function of enriching and promoting the circulation of blood, which not only promote No. 1 in its effect of building up vital-qi but also relieve swelling and pain, both used as minister drugs. No. 4 functions as adjuvant drug, which is capable of subsiding swelling to dissipate indurated mass and expelling toxin and helps No. 3 in resolving mass and draining pus. All ingredients together involve expelling pathogenic factors and building up healthy qi simultaneously so that toxins are removed with pus and tissue regeneration follows.
Cautions:
This recipe belongs to those for promoting pus discharge and thus it is contraindicated for the initial stage of carbuncles without formation of pus.
