Ingredients:
No. 1 Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 6 g;
No. 2 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (baked with ginger juice) 3 g;
No. 3 Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) 3 g;
No. 4 Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 3 g;
No. 5 Dandouchi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum) 9 g;
No. 6 Jiaozhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) (parched) 9 g;
No. 7 Lugen (Rhizoma Phragmitis) 60 g.
Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
Actions:
Eliminating heat-dampness, regulating the flow of qi and activating the middle energizer.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for vomiting and diarrhea due to damp heat, marked by vomiting and diarrhea, chest and epigastric fullness, vexation, scanty dark urine, greasy yellowish fur, smooth pulse. It is applicable to acute gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, paratyphoid and others, which are characterized by vomiting and diarrhea, chest and epigastric fullness, and greasy yellowish fur and ascribed to accumulation of damp heat in the middle-energizer with both heat and dampness equal predominance. This recipe is very effective in regulating the stomach and stopping vomiting. But in case of serious diarrhea it is necessary to add Biandou (Semen Dolichoris) and Yiyiren (Semen Coicis) so as to enhance the effect of inducing diuresis and relieving diarrhea.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by disturbance in ascending and descending function of the spleen and stomach qi due to accumulation of damp heat in the interior. It should be treated by clearing away heat, drying dampness and regulating the middle-energizer. Bitter and cold in nature, No. 2 can eliminate heat and dry dampness and regulate the stomach. No. 1, pungent and warm, can promote the flow of qi, eliminate dampness and send down the adverse flow of qi. As monarch drugs, both bring about the result of eliminating heat-dampness and regulating the middle energizer.
No. 6 assists No. 2 to clear away heat, No. 3 helps No. 1 eliminate dampness, and No.4 promotes the function of the monarch drugs to regulate the stomach and relieve vomiting, the three playing the role of minister drugs. No. 5, in combination with No. 6, can clear away heat from the chest and epigastrium so as to relieve restlessness with oppressive feeling. No. 7 is capable of clearing away heat, relieving vomiting and increasing body fluid so as to prevent the impairment of body fluid caused by excessive vomiting and diarrhea. No.5 and No. 7 act as adjuvant drugs.
