1) Potato Poultice
Make a poultice from grated cold raw potatoes. This can then be applied directly to the breasts as a topical treatment. Once the breast is covered with the potato poultice, cover the breast with a clean cloth. When the breast has dried, replace the clean cloth. This is one of my favorite home remedies for mastitis.
Calendula
2) Calendula and Comfrey Leaf Poultice
When I suffered from mastitis with my first child, I found that a poultice made from calendula flowers and comfrey leaves was the best natural remedy. Four times a day, I would apply hot towels to the breasts and then I would also apply the poultice at this time. The combination of the two helps to unblock the milk ducts and tubes in the breasts. This is also a great way to help soothe painful nipples. To make the paste, combine calendula flowers with comfrey leaves in a blender. Add a small amount of water and some flower. When blended, the end result should be a substance that resembles gelatin. Once the blending is complete, spread the poultice on a cotton cloth and then store in the freezer. This way, you have it handy for whenever you need it. Before applying to the breast, simply heat the cloth in the oven for a few moments so that it is warm.
3) Raw Cabbage Leaves
Raw cabbage leaves are wonderful for treating mastitis. You'll find that if you place a cabbage leaf in your bra, the leaves will actually draw the infection out of the breast and will also help to draw the heat from the breast as well. Change the leaves out when they become wilted and warm. You'll find that this natural treatment is best used when you first have a clogged duct and before the infection really sets in. I started using this when I was nursing my first child and now I use a cabbage leaf as soon as I notice any redness or soreness in my breast. The cabbage leaves are wonderful for quickly unclogging a blocked duct and keep infection from starting. Please give this natural treatment a try; you'll never have a severe breast infection again!
4) Echinacea
Experts recommend using Echinacea as an infusion rather than a tincture form. Try using one full dropper six times a day until your fever has subsided. Once the fever breaks, you can use smaller doses (about three times a day) until all symptoms of mastitis have cleared up. Boil one ounce of dried Echinacea root in a pint of boiling water. Remove from heat and allow steeping for a minimum of eight hours. Once it has fully steeped, drink two cups of this every day until the fever breaks. You can then progress to a lighter infusion and drink two cups of the lighter version until you are fully cured.
5) Rest
Be sure to take lots of breaks throughout the day and give your body time to rest. Make a point to take a nap every day. It is also helpful if you have lots of family and friends that can help you out around the house and to to help with older children while you tend to the baby. When I was nursing my youngest child, I would have friends come to the house every few hours or so that would help with daily chores and things around the house so I was able to devote all of my time to the baby. This was a great way for me to get enough rest and treat my mastitis so that it went away quickly.
