Syndrome differentiation and treatment
1. Common syndromes
(1) Dampness and heat fumigating and steaming skin
Main symptoms and signs: Yellowing of facial and occular skin with bright orange colour, loud cry, disinclination to suck milk, or fever, constipation, deep yellow urine, red tongue with yellowish and greasy fur.
Therapeutic methods: Clearing away heat and removing dampness by inducing diuresis, normalizing the function of the gallbladder to cure jaundice.
(2) Stagnation of cold and dampness
Main symptoms and signs: Yellowing of facial and ocular skin with dark and gloomy yellow colour, listlessness, cold limbs, loose bowels with greyish white stool, scanty urine, pale tongue with whitish and greasy fur.
Therapeutic methods: Warming the middle energizer to remove dampness, supplementing qi and strengthening the spleen.
(3) Jaundice due to blood stasis
Main symptoms and signs: Yellowing of facial and ocular skin with gradual deepening of colour which is dark and gloomy and lustreless, hard mass in the right hypochondrium, abdominal distension, visible abdominal bluish superficial venules, or ecchymoses, nasal bleeding, dark red lips, tongue with petechiae and yellowish fur, cyanotic superficial venule of index finger.
Therapeutic methods: Removing blood stasis and soothing the liver to remove jaundice.
2. Deteriorated syndromes
(1) Jaundice stirring up the wind
Main symptoms and signs: Yellowing of facial, ocular and general skin worsened gradually with orange colour, listlessness, somnolence, frequent cry with shrill voice, clonic convulsion of mouth angle or the whole body, or no eating and no cry, bulging of anterior fontanel, opisthotonus, red tongue with yellowish fur and cyanotic superficial venule of index finger.
Therapeutic methods: Calming the liver to stop endogenous wind and removing dampness by diuresis to cure jaundice.
(2) Prostration due to jaundice
Main symptoms and signs: Jaundice appearing within 24 hours after birth worsened quickly with deep yellow colour, concurrent sallow complexion, edema, short breath, listlessness, coma, no eating, no cry, cold limbs, cold chest and abdomen and pale tongue with whitish fur.
Therapeutic methods: Tonifying primordial qi and warming yang to save collapse.
