Treatment Based on Syndrome Differentiation:
1. Wind-Fire and Stagnated-Heat Syndrome
Main Symptoms: It is mostly seen in hand phlegmon, manifested by red swelling, burning pain with unclear margin on the dorsum of the hand, accompanied by aversion to cold, fever, headache, aching sensation in the body, reddened tongue, thin and yellowish coating, superficial and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: Expel wind, clear away heat, dissolve toxin and diminish tumefaction.

2. Dampness-Fire Accumulation Syndrome
Main Symptoms: It is mostly seen in hip phlegmon and foot phlegmon, manifested by local red swelling and burning pain. The burning tumefaction is worse in the center, with unclear margin, or wet ulceration. It is accompanied by aversion to cold, headache, aching sensation in the bone,appetite, brown urine, reddened tongue, yellow and greasy coating, slippery and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: Clear away heat, dissolve toxin, harmonize ying-nutrient system and remove dampness.

3. Blood Insufficiency Syndrome
Main Symptoms: The decayed flesh has dropped after ulceration, but tumefaction has not be eliminated yet.Or, the wound is in slightly red color, with unfresh granulation and thin discharged pus, accompanied by sallow complexion, low spirit, lassitude, poor appetite, pale tongue, teeth marks on the tongue margin, thin and whitish coating, thready and feeble pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: Regulate and replenish qi and blood.

Application Method
In the initial stage of tumefaction and pain, it is advisable to apply "Jin Huang Ointment" and "Yu Lu Ointment" in the infected area. After rupture, it is advisable to mix with "Ba Er Pellet" and "Qi San Pellet" and to cover the wound with "Hong you Ointment" externally. After pus is discharged completely, it is advisable to mix with "Sheng Ji Powder" and cover the wound with "Sheng Ji Bai Yu Ointment".

Cautions:
If the scope of phlegmon is bigger than carbuncle and the clinical symptoms are severer, it is requested to pay great attention. The hand should be suspended with a triangular scarf in the hand phlegmon. The infected foot should be raised to alleviate pain in the foot phlegmon. In accordance with the condition, it is advisable to use antibiotics properly in combination.
