This is a method to treat oculopathy caused by noxious heat with the drugs cold and cool in property to reduce fire and remove toxin.  It is applicable to ocular diseases caused by endopathic heat transformed from exogenous pathogenic factors or by upward invasion of visceral noxious heat with such common symptoms as sudden and severe onset, pain of eye with tenderness, photophobia and burning pain, hot tears, mucopurulent eye secretion, cherry-like swollen eyelid, turbidity of bulbar conjunctiva, ulcer of cornea, hypopyon, miosis and the general symptoms and signs of dry mouth, constipation, reddish tongue with yellowish coating and so on.

 

The method, with cold-cool actions, may easily damage yang-qi of the spleen and stomach and should avoid 1ong-term use in clinic. It must be used cautiously according to the patient's sickness and constitutional conditions.Besides, in the treatment of corneal diseases and fundus hemorrhage the method must be put into proper use since long-term use of cold and cool drugs can cause stagnancy of qi and blood and may make it difficult for nebular disorders to be cured. Patients with deficient fire should not be treated by this method.
