1. Spleen Transports Essence Upwards the Eyes
In the Chapter of Yuji Zhenzanglun in Suwen, it says:|" Deficiency of the spleen leads to the obstruction of the nine orifices", indicating that deficiency of the spleen can also cause the disorder of the eyes. In the Chapter of Manifestations of yin and yang in Suwen, it says :"The lucid yang is emitted from the upper orifices."Spleen-qi ascends to transport essential substances to the eyes, so that the eyes are nourished by the lucid yang and can see things.
2. Spleen Commands Blood and Blood Nourishes the Eyes
In the Section of Blood Syndrome in the Chapter of Miscellaneous Syndromes in Jingyue's Book, it says: "Since the spleen commands blood, deficiency of spleen-qi makes it difficult to control blood. Since the spleen produces blood, deficiency of spleen-qi makes it fail to govern blood and leads to extravasation of blood." Circulation of blood in the ocular collaterals depends on spleen-qi to command blood. If the spleen-qi is deficient, it will lead to ocular hemorrhage.
3. Spleen Governs Muscles and Monitors the Eyelids
In the Chapter of Flaccidity in Suwen, it says:"The spleen controls the muscles in the whole body." Since the spleen is responsible for the transportation and transformation of water and food, the essense derived from which can nourish the muscles. With the nourishment provided by the spleen, the eyelids are able to open and close.
4. Relationship Between Eyes and Stomach
The spleen and stomach are internally-externally paired and regarded as the acquired base of life. In the Chapter of Transmission and Transformation of Asthenia and Sthenia in Piwei Lun (Discussion on the Spleen and Stomach), it says:"The nine orifices are dominated by the five zang-organs. With the nourishment of stomach-qi, the five zang-organs can function normally." It also points out that "If the stomach-qi becomes deficient, the ears, eyes, mouth and nose will all be in disorder."
Besides, in the Chapter of the Manifestations of Yin and Yang in Suwen, it says:"The lucid yang flows into the upper orifices while the turbid yin goes into the lower orifices. "Since the spleen is responsible for ascending the lucid and the stomach for descending the turbid, the normal functions of both organs will direct the turbid to be discharged from the lower orifices and not to attack the upper orifices.
