Magnolia Decoction for Warming the Middle energizer

Source: Neiwaishang Bianhuo Lun (Differentiation on Endogenous and Exogenous Diseases).

Ingredients:
No. 1 Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 30 g;
No. 2 Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 30 g;
No. 3 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 15 g;
No. 4 Fuling (Poria) 15 g;
No. 5 Caodoukou (Semen Alpiniae) 15 g;
No. 6 Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 15 g;
No. 7 Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) 2 g.
 
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder, decoct 9 g each time in water for oral application with 3 slices of fresh ginger added.
  
Actions:
Promoting flow of qi and warming the middle-energizer, drying dampness and relieving fullness.
   
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of qi stagnation due to accumulation of dampness, marked by epigastric and abdominal distension and fullness or pain, no appetite, greasy whitish fur, deep and taut pulse. It is applicable to chronic gastritis, chronic enteritis, gastric ulcer, leukorrhagia and others, which pertain to accumulation of dampness in the middle-energizer and qi stagnation of the spleen and stomach. If concomitant with heaviness of the body and limb edema, add Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae) to descend qi and induce diuresis.

In case of sharp pain with cold sensation in the abdomen, add Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) and Gaoliangiiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum) to warm the middle-energizer and dispel cold so as to relieve pain.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by accumulation of cold and dampness in the middle-energizer and qi stagnation of the spleen and stomach. It should be treated by promoting flow of qi, warming the middle-energizer, drying dampness and relieving fullness. The first ingredient is capable of promoting circulation of qi and drying dampness, and used as monarch drug. No. 5 functions as minister drug, which warms the middle-energizer and dispels cold, dries dampness and activates the spleen.

No. 2 and No. 6 help No. 1 relieve fullness, while No. 7 and fresh ginger assist No.5 in warming the stomach and spleen to dispel cold and relieve pain. No. 4 has the function of reinforcing the spleen and promoting diuresis. These five ingredients together play the part of adjuvant drugs. No. 3 is used as guiding the mediate the properties of other drugs.
