Administration:
Decoct No. 7 first in water to get its decoction, in which other ingredients are decocted for oral application.

Actions:
Warming yang and invigorating the spleen, nourishing blood and arresting bleeding.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for bleeding syndrome due to yang deficiency, marked by hematochezia, or hematemesis, epistaxis, or metrorrhagia with dark-red blood, cold limbs, sallow complexion, pale tongue with whitish fur, deep thready and feeble pulse. It is applicable to chronic hemorrhage of gastrointestinal tract, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and others attributable to deficiency of spleen-yang. In case of poor appetite, replace No. 5 with Ejiaozhu (Colla Corii Asini) (Pearled and parched ass-hide gelatin with talc powder) to reduce its greasy nature. In case of excessive deficiency of qi with lassitude and weakness, add Renshen (Radix Ginseng) to supplement qi so as to control blood. In case of excessive hemorrhage, add Shensanqi (Radix Notoginseng) and Baiji (Rhizoma Bletillae) to strengthen the styptic action.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of the spleen-yang, deficiency-cold of the middle-energizer and dysfunction of the spleen in controlling blood. It should be treated by warming the spleen-yang and nourishing blood to stop bleeding. No. 7 (also called Fulonggan) functions as monarch drug to warm and nourish the middle-energizer and arrest bleeding. No. 3 and No. 4 can warm the spleen-yang so as to restore its function of controlling blood and are used as minister drugs.

Both monarch and minister drugs bring about the result of treating both the superficial symptoms as well the root cause of the syndrome. No. 2 and No. 5 act as adjuvant drugs, which can, on the one hand, nourish yin and blood so as to make up the deficiency of both yin and blood as the result of bleeding and on the other, function together with No. 6 to restrict the excessive warm and dry nature of No. 3 and No.4 so as to prevent disturbance or impairment of blood. Meanwhile, No. 3 and No. 4 can restrict the greasy nature of No. 2 and No. 5. Thus it can be seen they are both opposite and supplementary to each other.

No. 1 is used as guiding drug to supplement qi, invigorate the spleen and mediate the properties of the other drug as well. These ingredients together form a recipe with both cold and warm natures, treating both the primary and the secondary by coordinating potent and mild drugs. So it is warm but not dry and tonic but not greasy.

Cautions: This recipe is contraindicated for hemorrhage with bright red, dry mouth and reddened tongue.
