Ingredients:
No. 1 Daji (Herba seu Radix Cirsii Japonici);
No. 2 Xiaoji (Herba Cephalanoploris);
No. 3 Heye (Folium Nelumbinis);
No. 4 Cebaiye (Cacumen Biotae);
No. 5 Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae);
No. 6 Qiancaogen (Radix Rubiae);
No. 7 Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae);
No. 8 Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei);
No. 9 Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis);
No. 10 Zonglupi (Petiolus Trachycarpi);
All in equal dosage.
Administration:
Each ingredient is burned with its nature maintained and then ground into powder. A Chinese ink stick is properly ground in an adequate amount of juice of lotus root or carrot. 9- 15 g of the powder is taken with the juice containing Chinese ink each time. If the above drugs are made into pills, it is named "Shihui Wan". And in this case, take 9 g each time orally and twice or 3 times daily with warm boiled water.
Actions: Removing heat from blood to arrest bleeding.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for bleeding syndrome due to blood heat, marked by hematemesis, hemoptysis, and epistaxis with bright red, reddened tongue with yellowish fur, rapid pulse. It is applicable to such diseases with the above symptoms as hemorrhage of digestive tract, bronchiectasis and hemoptysis from tuberculosis. In case of excessive heat in the blood, make the above drugs into decoction instead of powder and increase the dosage of No. 8 and No. 7, and add Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) and Daizheshi (Ochra Haematitum) as well to make heat descend.
Elucidation:
The syndrome arises when the flare up of fire and qi scorches blood vessels and forces blood to go astray. It should be treated by removing heat from blood to arrest bleeding. This recipe is chiefly composed of such drugs with the action of cooling blood and stopping bleeding as No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Ingredient No. 10 has both astringent and styptic actions. No. 7 is capable of purging away fire, and No. 8 descending heat so as to restore normal circulation of blood.
No. 9 possesses the function of clearing away heat and cooling blood and can arrest bleeding and remove blood stasis when combined with No. 8. All ingredients are charred so as to enhance the astringent and styptic action. The lotus root or carrot juice and Chinese ink are meant to strengthen the effect of clearing away heat from blood and arresting bleeding. This is commonly used in rescue work for stopping bleeding, which involves both removing heat from blood and purging away heat, both astringent effect and removing blood stasis.
Cautions:
This recipe can only be used to treat the superficial symptoms of bleeding. Therefore after bleeding is arrested, the root cause of the syndrome should be dealt with. Besides, this recipe is contraindicated for bleeding with deficiency cold syndrome.
