Ingredients:
No. 1 Qianghuo (Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii) 9 g;
No. 2 Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 9 g;
No. 3 Gaoben (Rhizoma et Ligustici) 4.5 g;
No. 4 Fangfeng (Radix Ledebouriellae) 4.5 g;
No.5 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 4.5 g;
No.6 Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) 4.5 g;
No. 7 Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis) 3 g.
 
Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
  
Actions: Expelling wind-dampness.
  
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for exogenous wind-dampness syndrome, marked by heaviness and pain of the head, waist and back, or general pain of the body with difficulty in turning round, whitish fur and superficial pulse. It is applicable to common cold, rheumatic arthritis, hemicrania, angioneurotic headache and others, which pertain to attack by exogenous wind dampness on the superficies and upper body. In case of severe aversion to cold and heaviness of the body, add Zhichuanwu (Radix Aconiti Praeparata) and Zhicaowu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Praeparata) to enhance the effect of dispelling cold and relieving pain. In case of prevailing dampness with heaviness of the body and greasy fur, replace No. 4 with Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) and add Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis) to strengthen the action of eliminating dampness.
  
Elucidation:
The syndrome arises when exogenous wind and dampness attack and retain in the superficies, leading to disorder of qi and blood of the meridians and collaterals. It should be treated by eliminating wind and dampness, removing obstruction and relieving pain. No. 1 and No. 2 are effective in expelling wind and dampness respectively from the upper and lower body and used as monarch drugs, whose combination can eliminate wind and dampness from the body and relieve pain. No. 3 and No. 4 are minister drugs with the action of eliminating wind and dampness so as to relieve headache.

No. 6 has the function of activating blood circulation, removing obstruction from meridians, dispelling wind and relieving pain, while No. 7 possesses the function of dispersing wind and dampness to relieve headache, both playing the role of adjuvant drugs. No. 5 serves as guiding drug, which can not only supplement qi and regulate the middle-energizer so as to prevent other drugs from consuming qi, but also mediate drug properties.

Both this recipe and Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang comprise Qianghuo (Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Ledebouriellae), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) with the effect of eliminating wind and dampness and relieving headache and general pain. But the latter includes also Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Xixin (Herba Asari), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae) and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), thus has a stronger effect in relieving exterior syndrome and can also clear away heat from the interior.

It is fit for cases with chief manifestations as aversion to cold and fever concomitant with bitter mouth and slight thirst.The former, however, consists also of Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis) and Gaoben (Rhizoma et Ligustici), which are mainly for eliminating wind and dampness from the body with a milder action of relieving exterior syndrome. Therefore it is suitable for cases chiefly manifested as heaviness of the head and body with slight aversion to cold and fever.

Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated for headache caused by hyperactivity of liver-yang or deficiency of both qi and blood.
