This recipe is indicated for stranguria due to dampness and heat, marked by frequency and urgency of urination with pain, urinary stuttering and bradyuria, turbid and dark urine, even uroschesis, stuffiness of the lower abdomen, dry mouth and throat, greasy yellowish fur, smooth and rapid pulse. It is applicable to cystitis, urethritis, acute prostatitis, calculi of the urinary system, pyelonephritis and others, which chiefly manifest frequency and urgency of urination with pain, reddened tongue with yellowish fur and pertain to accumulation of dampness and heat in the lower energizer.
This recipe is commonly used for various types of stranguria due to downward flow of damp-heat. In case of stranguria with blood in urine, add Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Xiaoji (Herba Cephalanoploris) and Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae) to remove heat from blood and cool blood. In case of stranguria caused by urinary stone, add Jinqiancao (Herba Lysimachiae) and Haijinsha (Spora Lygodii) to remove stone and relieve stranguria. In case of stranguria marked by chyluria, add Bixie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) and Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) to separate the clear from the turbid.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by flow of dampness-heat down to the urinary bladder and obstructed urination. It should be treated by clearing away heat and purging fire, inducing diuresis and relieving stranguria. This recipe is very effective in eliminating dampness and heat because it comprises many diuretics as No. 7, No. 4, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. Ingredient No. 5 is capable of removing damp heat from the three energizers and No. 8 purging away heat and fire. No. 6 mediates the effects of other drugs and Dengxincao (Medulla Junci) leads heat downward.
Cautions:
This recipe consists of diuretics with bitter and cold nature and is fit for syndrome with excess fire. Thus it should be used with great caution in those with weak constitution or pregnant women.
