Ingredients:
No.1 Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radici) 30 g
No.2 Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis) 30 g
No.3 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 3 g

Administration:
Grind the above drugs into coarse powder first and then mix 9 g each time with 20 g Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae) and decoct them in water for oral administration.

Actions:
Purging pathogenic heat in the lung, relieving cough and asthma.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for mild cases of cough and asthma due to lung-heat in children, manifested as asthma, cough, feverish skin that is aggravated in the afternoon, red tongue with yellowish fur, thready and rapid pulse. It can be used to deal with infantile pneumonia, bronchitis, and early stage of measles, which pertain to cough and asthma due to lung-heat. In case of adverse flow of qi due to lung-heat manifesting dominant fever, cough and asthma, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) can be added to strengthen the effect of purging lung-heat. For cough with little sputum due to dryness-heat in the lung, Gualoupi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis) and Chuanbeimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirhosae) can be added to help moisten the lung to relieve cough.
 
Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to heat accumulating in the lung and impairing yinfen, further causing lung’s failure in purifying and descending function. It should be treated by purging heat in the lung to relieve cough and athma. Ingredient No. 2 has the effect of dispelling lung-heat, and functions as monarch drug. Ingredient No. 1 serves as minister drug, which helps bring about the effect of the monarch drug. Ingredient No. 3 and Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae) are used as adjuvant and guiding drug, capable of nourishing the stomach, strengthening the lung by way of reinforcing the spleen, and coordinating the effects of all the ingredients. The four drugs are mild in action and thus can purge heat from the lung without impairing body resistance when applied in children.

Cautions:
Simple in ingredients and mild in action, the recipe is not advisable for serious cases of heat accumulation in the lung.
