Administration:
Add 2 slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 3 pieces of Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) into the above ingredients and decoct all the drugs in water for oral application.

Actions: Invigorating qi and nourishing blood.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for deficiency syndrome of both qi and blood, marked by pale or sallow complexion, dizziness, lassitude, shortness of breath, dislike for talking, poor appetite, pale tongue with thin whitish fur, thready and weak pulse. It can be modified to treat deficiency syndrome of qi and blood as seen after serious diseases or in various chronic diseases or menstrual disorder with chief manifestations as shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, pale tongue and thready pulse.

For severe cases, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) and Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) to enhance the effect of restoring qi and blood, namely Shiquan Dabu Tang. If concomitant with palpitation and insomnia due to deficient cultivation of cardiac spirit, add Fushen (Sclerotium Poriae Circum Radicem Pini) and Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) to tranquilize mind.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is mostly caused by prolonged duration of disease, disorder after disease or excessive hemorrhage and insufficiency of qi and blood. It should be treated by means of nourishing qi and blood. Ingredients No. 5 and No. 4 are respectively to invigorate the primordial qi and blood and function as monarch drug. Ingredients No. 6, No. 7, No. 1 and No. 3 act as minister drug to help bring about the effect of the monarch drug. Ingredient No. 2 with the action of promoting the circulation of qi and blood is used as adjuvant drug.

And the last ingredient serves as guiding drug to regulate the middle-energizer and mediate the properties of other drugs. Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) added while decocting the drugs are meant to supplement qi, regulate the spleen and stomach. This compatibility is actually the combination of two prescriptions, Sijunzi Tang and Siwu Tang, thus achieving the result of nourishing both qi and blood.
