No.2  Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 9 g
No.3  Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) 6 g

Administration:
Decoct the drugs in water for oral application.

Actions:
Benefiting qi and promoting the production of body fluid, astringing yin and arresting perspiration.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for impairment of both qi and yin, marked by lassitude, polyhidrosis, shortness of breath, mental fatigue, dry throat and thirst, or protracted cough with little but sticky sputum, dry reddened tongue with little fur, feeble rapid pulse. It is applicable to chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis, cardiac arrhythmia and other diseases, which have such chief symptoms as lassitude, shortness of breath, dry throat, and reddened tongue, and pertain to deficiency of both qi and yin.

The first ingredient in the recipe is sweet and warm in nature and could be replaced by Xiyangshen (Radix Panacis Quinquefolii) in cases of qi and yin deficiency with heat. For critical cases the dosage of all the ingredients should be enlarged. Injection prepared on the basis of this recipe (Shengmai Injection) is commonly used to treat acute myocardiac infarction, cardiogenic shock, toxic shock, hemorrhagic shock, coronary heart disease and endocrinopathy, which pertain to deficiency of both qi and yin.

Elucidation:
The syndrome results from impairment of yin by warm-heat and summer-heat, or impairment of qi and yin due to impairment of the lung by protracted cough. It should be treated by means of invigorating qi and nourishing yin, and concurrently arresting perspiration and relieving cough. The first ingredient acts as monarch drug to replenish qi and promote the production of body fluid for invigorating the lung. Ingredient No. 2 is used as minister drug to nourish yin and clear away heat for moistening the lung.

The last ingredient can not only astringe yin and arrest perspiration, but also astringe the lung and relieve cough, acting as adjuvant drug. Respectively with tonic, moist and astringent effect, the three ingredients are together used to achieve the results of invigorating qi and nourishing yin, preserving yin to arrest perspiration, moistening the lung to stop cough, and promoting the production of body fluid to quench thirst.
