Decoction for strengthening the Heart and Spleen

Source: Jisheng Fang (Prescriptions for Life Saving).

Ingredients:
No.1 Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 9g
No.2 Fushen (Sclerotium Poriae Circum Radicem Pini) 9 g
No.3 Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 12 g
No.4 Longyanrou (Arillus Longan) 12 g
No.5 Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) 12 g
No.6 Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 6 g
No.7 Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 6 g
No.8 Zhigancao (Radix Glycgrrhizae Praeparatae) 3 g
No.9 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 9 g
No.10 Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) 6 g

Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder, decoct 12 g each time with 6 g of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 3 pieces of Dazed (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) in water for oral application.

Actions:
Replenishing qi and nourishing blood, invigorating the spleen and heart.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for deficiency syndrome of both qi and blood of the spleen and heart and syndrome of failure of the spleen to control blood, marked by palpitation or severe palpitation, amnesia, insomnia, poor appetite and lassitude, sallow complexion, or metrorrhagia, hematochezia, advanced menstruation in large amount and light color, or dribbling menstruation, pale tongue with thin whitish fur, thready and weak pulse. It is applicable to neurosism and angiocardiopathy which pertain to deficiency of both the spleen and heart, as well as gastroduodenal ulcer bleeding, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, thrombocytopenic purpura and others, which pertain to failure of the spleen to control blood.

In case of excessive deficiency of blood, add Shudihuang (Rhizome Rehmanniae Praeparatae) to enhance the function of nourishing blood, which is called Hei Guipi Wan when made into pills. If the bleeding syndrome belongs to cold type, add charcoals of Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) and Paojiang ( Rhizoma Zingiberis Praeparatae) to warm the meridians for stopping bleeding. If the bleeding syndrome belongs to heat type, add charcoals of Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) and Zonghi (Petiolus Trachycarpi) to remove heat from the blood for arresting bleeding.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by impairment of the heart and spleen due to excessive contemplation, leading to deficiency of qi and blood and further giving rise to failure of the spleen in transportation and deficient cultivation of cardiac spirit. This should be treated by replenishing qi and nourishing blood, and reinforcing the spleen and heart. Ingredient No. 3 can replenish qi and invigorate the spleen, and No. 4 nourishes blood and tranquilize mind. Both play the role of monarch drug and can nourish qi and blood simultaneously.

Ingredients No. 6, No. 1 and No. 9 function as minister drugs to help bring about the effect of monarch drugs. Ingredient No. 2, No. 5, No. 10 and No. 7 act as adjuvant drugs, of which the first three possess the action of tranquilizing mind and the last regulating qi and invigorating the spleen. Ingredient No. 8 is used as guiding to supplement qi, regulate the middle-energizer and mediate the properties of other drugs. Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) are meant to regulate the spleen and stomach.
