It is applicable to orchitis, epididymitis, gastroduodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis and others, which are ascribed to accumulation of cold and stagnation of qi. In case of severe swelling and falling to one side, add Lizhihe (Semen Litchi) and Juhe ( Semen Citri Reticulatae) to enhance the effect of promoting the flow of qi and relieving pain. In case of severe local pain with cold sensation, add Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi ) and Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae) to strengthen the effect of dispelling cold to relieve pain.
Elucidation: The syndrome is caused by cold accumulation in the liver meridian, leading to disorder of qi function. It should be treated by regulating the flow of qi and dispelling cold to relieve pain. The first ingredient has the function of promoting the flow of qi, dispelling cold and relieving pain and is used as monarch drug. Pungent, warm and aromatic in nature, No. 4 is capable of dispersing stagnated liver-qi, No. 2 promoting the flow of qi to relieve pain, No. 3 warming the liver to dispel cold, and No. 5 dispelling cold and relieving pain. They all function as minister drugs, and together enhance the effect of No.1 in promoting the flow of liver-qi. Used as adjuvant drugs, No. 6 possesses the action of descending qi and remove stagnation, while No. 7 and No. 8 have their cold nature reduced and their action of promoting the flow of qi and removing stagnation strengthened after roasted together.
Cautions: This recipe bears a warm and dry nature, therefore, should not be used in case of pain from hernia due to downward flow of damp heat.
