Ingredients:
No.1 Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae) 15 - 20 g
No.2 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 9 g
No.3 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 5 - 9 g
No.4 Binglang (Semen Arecae) 5 g
No.5 Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 5 g
No.6 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 5 g
No.7 Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 6 g
No.8 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 9 g
No.9 Guangui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 2 - 5 g
Administration:
Smash the above drugs into coarse powder and decoct 15g each time in water for oral administration.
Actions:
Clearing away damp heat and regulating qi and blood.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for dysentery due to damp heat, marked by abdominal pain, pus and blood in the stool, tenesmus, burning sensation in the anus, scanty dark urine, yellowish greasy fur, smooth and rapid pulse. It can be used to treat such diseases with difficult defecation, abdominal pain and tenesmus due to damp heat as bacillary dysentery, amebic dysentery, irritable colitis and acute enteritis, etc. The employment of Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) or Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) depends on the actual purpose of removing heat from blood and promoting blood circulation, or of nourishing yin to relieve pain. In case of high fever, pus and blood in the stool, Baitouweng (Radix Pulsatillae) and Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae) can be added to enhance the effects of clearing away heat and toxin to relieve dysentery.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to accumulation of damp heat and epidemic pathogens in the intestine, leading to incoordination of qi and blood. It should be treated by clearing away heat, eliminating toxin and dampness, and regulating qi and blood. Ingredient No. 3 and No. 8 are capable of clearing away heat and toxin and drying dampness to relieve dysentery, acting as monarch drug. As minister drug, No. 7 is bitter and cold in property an has purgative and descending actions. It can not only help the monarch drug purge fire and dry dampness, but'' also remove stagnation in the intestine, which is known as "treating dmrrhea with cathartics" No. 1 and No.2 bear the action of promoting and regulating blood circulation, and No. 4 and No. 5 promoting the flow of qi. With a small dosage No. 9 is meant to prevent drugs of bitter and cold property from impairing middle energizer and latent dampness and heat because it is pungent and hot in property. It can also warm and promote the flow of blood and assist No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 in regulating the flow of qi and blood. These five ingredients together play the part of adjuvant drug. No. 6 serves as guiding drug, which mediates the properties of other drugs and can relieve spasm and pain when combined with No. 1.
Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated at the onset of dysentery concomitant with exterior syndrome.
