Ingredients:
No.1  Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) 150 g
No.2  Zhiguiban (Plastsum Testudinis Praeparatae) 120 g
No.3  Chaozhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) 60 g (baked)
No.4  Shudihuang (Rhizoma Rehmaniae Praeparatae) 60 g
No.5  Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 60 g
No.6  Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 60 g
No.7  Suoyang (Herba Cynomorii) 45 g
No.8  Zhibaogu (Os Pardi Praeparatae) 50 g (originally Os Tigris)
No.9  Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) 15 g

Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder and make into boluses by mixing up with honey; take 9 g each time and twice daily with light salty water or with warm boiled water. Or prepare them into decoction with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.

Actions:
Nourishing yin and purging fire, strengthening tendons and bones.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for flaccidity syndrome, marked by soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, flaccid tendons and bones, emaciated legs and feet, weary walking, reddened tongue with little fur, thready and weak pulse. It is applicable to tuberculosis of knee joint, myodystrophy, peripheral palsy, poliomyelitis sequel and others, which manifest chiefly flaccidity of the lower limbs. The effect of reinforcing tendons and bones will be enhanced if Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) and mutton are added to this recipe.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of essence and blood in the liver and kidney, causing interior heat and yin deficiency, and lack of nourishment in tendons and bones. It should be treated by nourishing yin and purging fire, and strengthening tendons and bones. The second ingredient is capable of nourishing kidney-yin and essence, and the first ingredient with bitter and cold nature clearing away heat and purging fire to preserve yin. Both function as monarch drugs with the effects of nourishing yin and purging away fire. Ingredient No. 4 and No. 6 bear the function of nourishing yin and blood and No. 3 nourishing yin and clearing away heat, all acting as minister drugs.

Ingredient No. 8 has the effect of strengthening the tendons and bones, and No. 7 warming yang and replenishing essence; Ingredients No. 9 and No.5, with the effect of warming the middle-energizer and regulating the stomach, can protect the stomach from impairment by the bitter and cold nature of No. 1 and No. 3, and prevent yin-nourishing tonics from inducing dampness and causing stagnation, all of these four drugs playing the role of adjuvant drug.

Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated in flaccidity of the lower limbs due to dampness or attack by exogenous pathogenic factors.
