Actions:
Replenishing qi to enrich blood, nourishing yin to restore pulse.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for palpitation or severe palpitation from deficiency of qi and blood, marked by intermittent pulse, lassitude, shortness of breath, dry reddened tongue with little fur; or deficiency of qi and yin due to protracted cough. It is applicable to coronary atherosclerotic cardiopathy, rheumatic heart disease, viral myocarditis, hyperthyroidism, functional arrhythmia and others, which manifest palpitation, shortness of breath, and intermittent pulse and pertain to deficiency of qi and blood. It can also be used to treat chronic bronchitis and protracted cough from tuberculosis, which pertains to impairment of both qi and yin.

Clinically Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparatae) is often used. In case of severe palpitation, add Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) and Baiziren (Semen Platycladi) or Longchi (Fossilia Dentis Mastodi) and Cishi (Magnetitum) to tranquilize mind for arresting palpitation. For protracted cough due to deficiency of the lung, it is advisable to subtract No. 5 and No. 2 to prevent the impairment of body fluid by the warm and dry nature of the drugs. Instead, add Chuanbeimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirhosae) and Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) to nourish the lung for arresting cough.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by yin-blood deficiency of the meridians and deficiency of yang-qi and blood. It should be treated by means of replenishing qi to nourish blood, nourishing yin to restore pulse. With larger dosages, ingredients No. 1 and No. 4 act as monarch drugs, one invigorating qi and heart and the other nourishing yin and blood. Used as minister drugs, ingredients No. 3 and No. 9 help No. 1 in supplementing qi, and No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8 assist No. 4 in nourishing blood. Ingredients No. 5 and No. 2 function as adjuvant drugs with the effects of warming the heart-yang and promoting blood flow. Besides the first ingredient also mediates the properties of other drugs and is used as guiding drug. All drugs in compatibility enrich the meridians with sufficient blood, restore pulse and relieve palpitation.
