Ingredients:
No.1 Shudihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparatae) 180 g
No.2 Zhiguiban ( Plastrum Testudinis Praeparatae) 180 g
No.3 Huanghai (Cortex Phellodendri) 120 g (parched)
No.4 Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) 120 g (parched)
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder, then mix the powder with steamed pork spinal cord and honey to make boluses; take 9 g each time and twice daily with warm boiled water or with light salty water. Or prepare them into decoction with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.
Actions: Nourishing yin and purging fire.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency marked by steaming sensation in bones, hectic fever, night sweat, seminal emission, cough, hemoptysis, vexation, irritability, feverish and sore knees and feet, reddened tongue with little fur, rapid and forceful chi pulse. It is applicable to hyperthyroidism, tuberculosis, renal tuberculosis, bone tuberculosis, diabetes and others attributable to hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency. In case of deficiency of the lung-yin with cough, add Tianmendong (Radix Asparagi) and Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) to nourish yin by moistening pathogenic dryness.
In case of severe hemoptysis and hematemesis, add Xianhecao (Herba Agrimoniae ) and Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae) to arrest bleeding by removing heat from the blood. In case of severe night sweat caused by hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency, add Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis) and Duanmuli (Concha Ostreae) (calcined) to dispel fire of deficiency type and strengthen the superficial resistance for stopping sweating. In case of severe seminal emission, add Jinyingzi (Fructus Rosne Laevigatae) and Sangpiaoxiao (Ootheca Mantidis ) to consolidate kidney essence for arresting emission.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by upward flaming of deficiency fire due to yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, which should be treated by nourishing yin and purging fire. The first two ingredients act as monarch drug to nourish yin and suppress yang. While the last two, cold in nature and bitter in flavor, are used as minister drug to purge away heat and preserve yin. Pork spinal cord and honey are sweet and moist in nature and used as adjuvant drug, which can help the monarch drug in replenishing essence and inhibit the bitter and dry nature of Ingredient No. 3.
