Ingredients:
No.1 Baihe (Bulbus Lilii) 12 g
No.2 Shudihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparatae) 9 g
No.3 Shengdihuang (Rhizorna Rehmanniae) 9 g
No.4 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 9 g
No.5 Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 6 g
No.6 Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 g
No.7 Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) 6 g
No.8 Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) 3 g
No.9 Chuanbeimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirhosae) 6 g
No.10 Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 9 g
Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
Actions: Reinforcing the lung and kidney, relieving cough and resolving sputum.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of yin deficiency of the lung and kidney marked by cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, dry and painful throat, vertigo, dysphoria with feverish sensation in chest, palms and soles especially in the afternoon, reddened tongue with little fur, thready and rapid pulse. It is applicable to tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasic hemoptysis, chronic laryngopharyngitis, spontaneous pneumothorax and others, which pertain to yin deficiency of the lung and kidney. In case of profuse yellowish sputum, add Danxing (Arisaema cum Bile), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Gualoupi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis) to clear away heat from the lung for reducing sputum.
In case of severe dyspnea, add Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae ) and Kuandonghua (Flos Farfarae) to relieve cough and dyspnea. In case of severe hemoptysis, subtract No. 7 or add Baiji (Rhizoma Bletillae), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae) and Xianhecao (Herba Agrimoniae) to enhance the effect of arresting bleeding.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by yin deficiency of the lung and kidney, the flaring up of deficiency fire, impairment of the lung collateral and failure of the lung to disperse and descend. It should be treated by invigorating the lung and kidney to relieve cough and reduce sputum. The first ingredient is capable of nourishing the lung-yin and promoting production of body fluid so as to relieve cough; Ingredients No. 2 and No. 3 can nourish the kidney-yin and remove heat from the blood.
These three ingredients are monarch drugs in the recipe. The last ingredient helps the first one in nourishing the lung-yin and clearing away heat, and No. 8 assists No. 2 and No. 3 in nourishing kidney yin and cooling blood to stop bleeding. Both act as minister drugs. Functioning as adjuvant drugs, ingredients No. 4 and No. 5 can nourish yin and blood, No. 9 moisten the lung and resolve phlegm, and No. 7 is good for throat and can guide other drugs upward. Ingredient No. 6 purges fire and mediates the properties of other drugs and serves as guiding drug.
